The pandemic has got us all clicking "add to cart" more often than we'd probably like to admit. Hey, we're not here to judge! But if you dread the return process that comes with ordering clothes online, guess what? Our friend, style expert Gretta Monahan, has tips for making sure clothes you order online actually fit — so you're less likely to have to deal with returns. From knowing how to measure your bust, hips and waist the right way to an app that uses your camera to scan your body and nail down your size at various brands, Gretta's got your back. After all, online shopping is supposed to be fun!
1. Take Fresh Measurements
"I know I'm not the only one that's size has changed during the pandemic," Gretta says. "Doesn't matter!"
For your bust and your hips, measure the fullest area around, Gretta says. For your waist, you want to hit the narrowest area, which is typically 1-3 inches above your belly button. "Don't suck it in, because you want your clothes to feel comfortable."
"Every store and brand has a different size chart, so you need your own measurements to be able to shop accurately," Gretta stresses.
2. Try The Sizer App
"There's an app called Sizer that lets you actually scan your body with your phone and then uses the data to recommend different sizes from different brands," Gretta says.
3. See What Size The The Fit Model Is Wearing + Pay Attention To Her Measurements
Look at the details of the fit model, Gretta recommends. Many sites will tell you the model's height and what size of clothing she's wearing. This information, along with your own measurements, can further inform you on how the product fits. "This could be super helpful to figure out if something is actually going to be longer, shorter on you, fit tighter, snugger or looser," she says.
4. Choose More Forgiving Styles
To ensure a better fit at home, stick to more forgiving styles — like loose dresses and soft, easy tops — rather than super-fitted or structured pieces like a pencil skirt.
5. BONUS TIP TO HELP YOU SAVE $$$: New Ways to Get Discount Codes!
Here's a great tip from Gretta: If you're not sure about an item, put it in your cart and leave the site without completing the purchase. Sometimes, brands and online stores will reach out to you with a special discount. Also, make sure you have an account set up, so that if discounts are available, you'll get them.
Gretta has another pro tip for scoring deals that even we didn't know about. Turns out, the chat boxes you've likely been seeing on more sites these days are not only for asking questions about the clothes. "You can actually ask for discounts and promo codes. It's the coolest, and you can get access to deals that you might not ever find elsewhere otherwise," Gretta says. We can't wait to try!
