Tons of gadgets are released each year, but which ones are actually worth your money? Lifestyle expert and DIY pro Carter Oosterhouse says these are the 5 best home tech products for 2023 that will make your life easier, greener and smarter.
Esicoo Smart Plug
The Esicoo Smart Plug turns any product into a smart product! All you need to do is plug any device with the corresponding cord and use your phone to turn that plug on and off. Such an easy setup.
This gadget is great for lamps, string lights, chargers, and appliances, and can be voice activated with Alexa and Google.
Plus, the nifty device is very budget-friendly at only $25 (on sale for 19.99).
Lomi Home Composter
The Lomi Home Composter makes food waste disappear with the push of a button.
“I’ve actually had this in my home for a while and I love it because it is odor-free, pest-free, and mess-free,” Carter says about the toaster oven-sized device.
He adds that composting is one of the easiest things you can do to live a greener life as it could reduce your greenhouse gas emissions over time. Additionally, Carter says the device gives you great compost that you could use for your plants.
“We take all of these little pieces of material that otherwise would go into a landfill [and] we're able to put them in here and we get great composts.”
The device has three different time settings depending on what materials you put in.
For example, if you’re putting in hard rinds or broccoli stems, you’re going to want to choose the longer setting. However, if you're putting in soft fruits and veggies, you could choose a quicker setting.
It’s a splurge at $499 but “the cool thing about [the Lomi] is that it's going to eventually turn all [your scraps] into fantastic fertile compost that I can use all around the house. You don't feel guilty for having so much trash at the end of the day. It's a really cool feature and we love having this in our house,” Carter says.
Flume 2 Smart Home Water Monitor & Water Leak Detector
The Flume 2 Smart Home Water Monitor & Water Leak Detector allows you to monitor all the water in your home, including how much you use.
“That way you don’t waste water,” Carter says.
With its 24/7 monitoring, the device alerts you to water leaks inside your home as well as in your lawn or garden.
This device installs in just a few minutes over your water meter. More good news: it does not require pipe cutting, wiring or plumbing skills!
Additionally, you can check the monitor both in your home and on the Flume app.
NORSHIRE Tire Inflator
The NORSHIRE Tire Inflator is a purse-sized replacement for bulky tire inflators and has the PSI power to reinflate a tire in just a few minutes!
Not only is it compact enough to travel with you — it won’t take up precious space in your handbag or glove compartment! — but it is also strong enough that you’ll never have to worry about getting a flat again. Plus, it has a sensor so it will automatically stop filling once the tire is full.
“This thing is so cool because it's pretty much something that everybody should have. I am used to those tire inflaters that are massive... Whenever we have a flat tire, we have to go to the service station or have to get out a big compressor. It's bulky [and] it takes time,” Carter says.
He adds that you can charge the device through a USB port and also use it to inflate water toys, basketballs, volleyballs and more.
Philips Hue White A19 LED Smart Bulb, Bluetooth & Zigbee Compatible
These Philips Hue lightbulbs aren’t just your average lightbulbs; they are smart lights that can be activated through the Hue app.
Once you plug the bulb into your light fixture, all you do is download the app on your phone and connect to Bluetooth. From here, all of your lights will be programmable from your phone and can be turned on or off through voice activation.
“You can say, ‘Hey, lights, go down,’” Carter explains.
The lightbulbs are also dimmable and designed to provide longer, more energy-efficient lighting.
“It was so neat because I hooked up four different lights and I was able to set the tone [and] set the mood, all from my phone. So, I didn't need to put one of those dimmer switches on a wall plate [and] figure all of that stuff out. It was very easy. Just for my phone, I could control all the lights,” he adds.
Additionally, you can choose from preset light settings and enjoy music through Spotify.
