We've said it before and we'll say it again: choosing the right lighting for your home is HARD. Lighting can really make or break your space, which makes the task even more daunting.
Once you've decided on the type of light fixture you want, the next step is to determine the right size for the room in question.
Luckily, it doesn't require any complicated equations. In fact, interior designer and HGTV star Taniya Nayak shares a simple formula for sizing a chandelier that works every time. Plus, she has an easy rule of thumb for selecting an appropriately-sized table lamp.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT SIZE CHANDELIER
For the sizing of a chandelier, all you have to do is add the room's length in feet and the room's width in feet, Taniya explains. That number should be equal to the chandelier's diameter in inches.
For example, say your space measures 10 feet by 14 feet. You add those numbers to get 24, meaning you want a chandelier with a diameter of 24 inches for that room.
So simple!

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT SIZE LAMPSHADE
If you're choosing a lamp to place on a side table and you don't know how big it should be, Taniya has a general rule of thumb.
Aim for a lampshade with a diameter that is half the size of the table width.
While half the size is ideal, you can go bigger — but the lampshade diameter should not exceed the width of the table below it.
