Aren't itchy sweaters the worst? Luckily, there's a clever way to soften a wool sweater at home. So before you put that cute-but-itchy sweater in the giveaway pile, try these steps from fashion and lifestyle expert Amy E. Goodman. (For more sweater weather tips from Amy, check out her advice for how to wash a dry clean only sweater at home and an all-natural way to get smells out of an old sweater.
How To Make a Sweater Less Itchy + Softer
Step 1: Turn the sweater inside out. Fill a basin with cold water and add two tablespoons of white vinegar.
Step 2: Put the sweater in the water and let it soak for approximately 15 minutes.
Step 3: Work hair conditioner into the sweater from top to bottom, front and back — and don't forget the sleeves. "In the same way that we condition and soften our hair, we're softening the wool fibers of this sweater," Amy says. Let it rest on a towel for 30 minutes.

Step 4: Gently rinse the conditioner out of the sweater in cold water. Press excess water out of the sweater and let it dry on a towel overnight.
Step 5: Put the dry sweater in a sealable plastic bag and pop it in the freezer.
"In the same vein as when you do the cold shot on your hair dryer and it helps set [your] hair, this is going to help set those fine hairs of the sweater, make them smooth and have them stay down," Amy says.
