Tired of having a popcorn ceiling and want to spruce up your home with a new look? DIY couple @nikandliv.diy have a “shockingly simple” fix.
The Tulsa, Oklahoma pair — who have renovated two fixer-uppers and are currently renovating Liv’s childhood home — have amassed a social media following for posting easy-to-follow tutorials. Now, they want to help you remove your popcorn ceiling (and show you how to DIY an easy home backsplash.)
However, before you begin this project, you must get your ceiling tested for asbestos.
“Once you know you’re clear, it’s shockingly simple,” Nate and Liv say.
The two also say you must wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and warn that the project will get messy. That’s why they recommend covering your floors with some kind of fabric.
But, they say that removing your popcorn ceiling isn’t hard to do and only took them 2-3 days to completely do one of their homes.
Here are step-by-step instructions:
Supplies:
Paint Sprayer
Putty Knife
Tarp (for covering floors)
Sand Paper
Paint (of your choice)
Steps:
1. Spray your ceiling with water.
2. Let sit for about 10 minutes.
3. Scrape the popcorn right off!
“It’s SO satisfying,” they say.
4. Sand, dust and paint!
