To help ring in 2020, People magazine's editor-in-chief, Dan Wakeford, is here — and he's breaking down People's top stories of the decade. Plus, he's dishing on what we can look forward to in 2020 and beyond when it comes to each of these topics.

From the British royal family to the Kardashians, here are the biggest celebrity and pop culture stories that helped define the 2010s.

1. The Royals

"I think one of the most memorable moments within the royal calendar in the last decade was the marriage of William and Kate," Dan says. "23 million people watched this wedding. It was so popular."

And not long after, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's royal wedding introduced an American into the royal family.

"29 million people watched Harry and Meghan's wedding," Dan says.

Then came three children for William and Kate, plus baby Archie for Harry and Meghan.

What To Expect From The Royals In The 2020s: Dan predicts more royal babies in the next decade, as well as possible changes for William and Harry. "It's very likely in the next few years William will be one step above, closer to the monarchy, because there's rumors the Queen may actually stop her duties in a couple of years," he says. "Also, the boys have grown apart a little bit in the last few years, so we're hoping in the next decade they'll grow a little bit closer."

2. Superhero Movies

The rise of the superhero genre made superhero movies a huge trend over the last decade. "Avengers: Endgame" is currently the highest-grossing movie of all time with its $2.8 billion in gross revenue.

What To Expect From Superhero Movies In The 2020s: There's only more excitement to look forward to in 2020. There are five upcoming movies with female superhero lead characters — and four have female directors. "The New Mutants," "Black Widow" starring Scarlett Johansson, "Birds of Prey" starring Margot Robbie, Gal Gadot's "Wonder Woman 1984" and "The Eternals" with Angelina Jolie are all slated to come out this year.

3. The Kardashians

Another family that has been very high profile over the last 10 years is the Kardashian clan. "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" began in 2007, focusing mostly on Kim and the older sisters.

"In the last 10 years, the family have exploded. You've got the other half sisters, Kendall and Kylie, who are doing their own thing and [are] possibly more famous in their own right," Dan says. With Kim's marriage to Kanye West and the birth of their children, there's even more "celebrity appeal to this family," Dan points out.

What To Expect From The Kardashians In The 2020s: "The family now [has] over 700 trademarks [filed] — that means there's probably more businesses brewing there," according to Dan. Plus, there's a whole new generation of Kardashian babies who will be growing up this decade — and there's always the possibility of a few more being born into the family.

"These are some of my favorite stories of the year. At People, we love telling stories about ordinary people who have done extraordinary things," Dan says. "These people have lost half their body weight and really improved their health. It's so inspirational."

One of the people featured in the most recent "Half Their Size" issue, Marsha, joined Rachael and Dan in our studio to show off her new look and chat about some of the healthier habits she's put into action to help her lose 165 pounds and gain muscle.
