Give Your Cabinets New Life With This *SHINY* DIY

Want to spruce up an old piece of furniture but don't know how? Well, Alison Victoria, host of HGTV's "Windy City Rehab" has an easy DIY trick that will take any piece from womp womp to WOW.

Her secret ingredient? Brass shim stock. (A quick search online will tell you where you can find it!)

Brass shim stock is a thin metal sheeting that can give your interiors some SHINE! Here's how to use it:

Put adhesive onto the brass shim stock AND onto the surface where you want the brass shim stock to stick.

"Wait for this to get tacky, [after about] five minutes," Alison says. "Then both surfaces are really sticky and tacky and you're going to apply it."

After that, smooth it out with a wallpaper smoothing tool with force. Then, you can leave the glossy shim stock as is OR you can take it one step further and create a gorgeous patina toning (which is essentially aesthetically pleasing discoloration).

To do so, take a spray bottle filled with vinegar and spray the brass shim stock. Leave it for 24 hours and you will get a wonderful pattern that will stop every house guest in their tracks.

Use brass shim stock to cover cabinets, bars and other furniture, Alison suggests. It could be used for a pop of shine, or you can completely make over a piece. The possibilities are endless!
