How Bob Harper Avoids Overeating During the Holidays

The holidays are upon us—and that means parties, get-togethers and lots of eating and celebrating. To help us navigate how to have a healthy-ISH holiday—so we can still feast while feeling good—personal trainer Bob Harper is sharing some of his tips. 

"We're going to indulge, it's just part of the holidays, but I want you to be more realistic about it," Bob says. "I want you to think about the choices that you're making and you're taking care of yourself. And if you do overindulge, don't beat yourself up. I see so many people who get so upset with themselves...cut yourself some slack. It's all going to be okay." 

Here's how Bob enjoys the holiday season, while still feeling good afterwards. 

Don't Skip Meals    

"That’s one way to ensure you’ll overdo it at the party because you’ll be starving," says Bob. And that totally makes sense! Instead, focus on eating fiber and protein. "Even just some high fiber crackers with healthy fats and protein like peanut butter are a great option. Fiber and protein will keep you feeling full and satiated. Fiber is key in feeling fuller longer. If you’re feeling satiated going into a meal, you’re going to make better choices and you’ll be thinking with your head, not your stomach," explains Bob.   

Ask Yourself "Is It Worth It?"  

"When you're starting to make those choices, when the holidays are upon us, you have to say to yourself, 'Is it worth it?' That's the mantra that I live by," explains Bob.  

Bring a Healthy Dish 

"And whenever I get together with friends, I try to bring in something healthy," he says.  

Bob says that for Thanksgiving, he takes on the job of cooking the turkey because it's one of the healthier options. "I think turkey is one of the best choices because it's a good source of protein," he says.  

Listen to Your Body 

"You've heard that a million times, but what I mean by that is that you need to slow down when it's time for you to eat. Slow down for a minute and just take a breath, you don't have to go into that party thinking 'I just have to make a b-line to all that food'," Bob explains.  

Ultimately, it's important to remember that you are going to indulge during the holidays, but just try to have a clear head, according to Bob.  

Bonus Tip If You Overindulge Despite Your Best Efforts: Try Yoga  

When traveling for the holidays, sometimes it can be tough to stick to your usual workout routine, but Bob Harper says yoga can give you a good calorie burn if you take the right classes.  

"You can still get a good calorie burn from [yoga]. You can still feel good afterwards. What I would suggest...there [are] plenty of workouts that you can find online. Look for the ones that say 'Ashtanga yoga' and 'Vinyasa yoga'. Those are more rigorous," Bob explains.
