If you're anything like us and haven't been to the salon during the coronavirus pandemic, Chris Appleton — the celebrity hairstylist behind iconic hairstyles on everyone from Jennifer Lopez to Kim Kardashian — is coming to your rescue. He's demonstrating stylish fixes for the hair issues at the top of everyone's list: how to hide gray roots (without coloring them) + how to style your hair for Zoom meetings.
HOW TO HIDE GRAY ROOTS WITHOUT COLOR — DO A HALO BRAID
"A halo braid hairstyle is a perfect way to cover up roots and give you a flawless finish," Chris says.

Rachael Ray Show
- Start with a middle part and split the hair all the way down to the nape of the neck, using a tail comb.
- Create two low ponytails. (Chris uses his hands, rather than a brush, for a softer look.)
- Loosely braid both ponytails. "If you have fine hair," Chris says, "I like to use my tail comb [to] tease it a little bit to give you a little bit more volume."
- Pull the braids up along your hairline, covering any gray roots and hold in place with large pins.

THE BEST ZOOM HAIRSTYLE: SIMPLE PONYTAIL THAT LOOKS PROFESSIONAL & SOPHISTICATED

Rachael Ray Show
- Apply hairspray directly onto a big brush. "It stops you from getting any marks on the hair and evenly distributes the hairspray," Chris says.
- Brush hair up into a nice, tight ponytail, using a strong elastic band. Use your cheekbone to guide you when it comes to placing the ponytail. (Chris explains and demonstrates in the video above!)
- Tie a second elastic band one inch above the first. "This is going to give you extra volume and it's going to keep that ponytail in place," the celeb hairstylist says.
- To hide the elastic bands, take a small amount of hair from the underneath of your ponytail and wrap it around them, fastening with pins. "It really makes a difference between the ponytail looking kind of basic into something looking quite well done," Chris says.
