No one likes to feel stressed—but many of us are experiencing more feelings of stress and anxiety than ever before amid the pandemic. And as gastroenterologist Dr. Roshini Raj tells us, "stress can really negatively affect our health in so many ways—but particularly our gut."
"If you're anxious and you're nervous, it can really affect the functioning of your gut," the doc says. "When your brain gets stimulated by anxiety or nerves, it sends signals down to your gut through what's called the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve then stimulates your gut to move, to contract—and that's what gives you that somersault-like feeling when you're nervous about something."
If you're looking for strategies to help calm an anxious mind (and therefore settle your tummy!), Dr. Raj has a few tips. She likes to use a simple visualization exercise to help fight anxiety. She also recommends sipping on herbal teas that contain calming ingredients, specifically chamomile, lemon-ginger and peppermint.
"There are many herbal teas now that have these great, mood-boosting herbs," the doc says. "These are herbs that are known to really soothe the gut, ginger especially. And that's another way to calm down that nervous, butterfly-like feeling."
