To tell you the truth, Rachael says, she's not a big fan of kitchen gadgets—meaning she only keeps the really essential and useful ones around. And these are the tools she does swear by—some of which she made herself (because no one knows what a cook needs in the kitchen more than Rach).
And bonus...
They make fantastic gifts—for loved ones or yourself!
Bench Scraper
Bench scrapers—or what Rach likes to call "food movers"—are super-versatile and useful in the kitchen. Rach actually improved on the classic flat design by adding sides, making it easier and faster to move prepped ingredients to pots and pans.
Multi-Grater
This tool, which Rach invented, rests over a pot so you can grate garlic, nutmeg and other ingredients right into the vessel. Genius!
Vegetable Peeler
A sharp peeler is a must and can get through even a small mountain of potatoes effortlessly.
Channel Knife
This is John's pick. It's key for making twists from citrus peel for his amazing cocktails. You can use a regular knife, but a channel knife is quicker and easier—and more fun!
Editor's Pick:
Sharp Knife
A good knife with a sharp blade might just be your best friend in the kitchen. A dull knife is not only difficult to work with, it can be dangerous. Because you need to apply more pressure to cut through foods, there's a greater chance it will slip and injure you.
Rach makes a "razor sharp knife set" crafted from premium-quality Japanese stainless steel.
Giant Cutting Board
With a giant cutting board, you have space to work freely and can chop several ingredients without having to put them in little bowls. Rach loves giant cutting boards so much, she made her entire counter a cutting board!
Before she had that, though, she would buy the biggest Boos board she could find.
Garbage Bowl
Keeping a "garbage bowl" on the counter while you prep food saves time and energy. Instead of having to go back and forth to the trash/recycling/compost bins multiple times, you can do it once at the end. (Rach sells a colorful assortment of garbage bowls, but says any bowl or bucket will work.)
Like a bunch of these? You can get Rach's bench scrape, vegetable peeler AND garbage bowl in one handy set. (Again, great gift idea alert!)
