A few years ago, it seemed like everyone was all about oil pulling, the ancient dental remedy that involves swishing a tablespoon of oil — usually coconut, sesame, or sunflower — around in your mouth for 10-20 minutes. (Make sure you spit it out when you’re done!)
Supposedly, the oil can keep gingivitis at bay by dissolving plaque and fighting the microorganisms that cause bad breath. Whiter teeth and fresh breath sound great, but does oil pulling really work?
According to Chief Medical Officer at EHE, Dr. Tania Elliott, there isn’t much research saying so. “There’s nothing bad about doing this,” says Dr. Elliott, “but fluoride toothpaste is the way to go.”
So, there you have it: while oil pulling could work, you still shouldn’t forget to brush and floss!
If you ask us, we’d much rather make these Extra-Fudgy Coconut Oil Brownies with the stuff instead!
