Okonomiyaki is a quick and easy Japanese-style savory pancake, and four-year-old Instagram kid-fluencer @easypeasyjordan shares his family's recipe.

Ingredients

  • 1½ cups plus 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1½ cups shredded cabbage
  • 1 ¾ cups ground pork
  • 2 tablespoons canola or vegetable oil
For toppings:
  • About 3 tablespoons store-bought okonomiyaki sauce
  • About 2 tablespoons mayonnaise, preferably Japanese-style such as Kewpie
  • Bonito flakes (katsuobushi), to taste
  • Dried seaweed flakes (aonori), to taste
  • Pickled ginger (beni shoga), to taste

Yield

Serves: Makes 3

Preparation

In a bowl, whisk flour, egg, and ⅔ cup water until smooth and lumps are gone. Add cabbage and pork and mix to combine.

Heat oil in a pan set over medium heat. Scoop ⅓ of the batter onto the pan and spread into a circle. Cook on both sides until a nice golden brown, 6 to 7 minutes. Transfer to a serving plate.

Spread okonomiyaki sauce on one side of the okonomiyaki, then drizzle with mayonnaise. Sprinkle bonito and dried seaweed flakes on top, then garnish with pickled ginger.
