After Losing His Advertising Job Due To Covid, This Man Started Selling Filipino Food On Instagram

After losing his advertising job and father amid the Covid pandemic, Toronto's Wesley Altuna — who we discovered on Eater — turned to the comfort of cooking. Care packages of Filipino food for friends quickly turned into a food delivery business on Instagram (which now delivers about 100 meals a week!) — and Bawang (@bawang.to on Instagram) was born.

"I had to figure out a way to keep myself sane," Wesley says. "Cooking has always been very therapeutic for me. It's always been comfort for me. This is probably the hardest thing I've ever done. In the four days that I'm working, I'm pulling in anywhere between 65 to 80 hours, easily. It's hard work, but I love it. I feel like what I'm doing now serves a bigger purpose than just filling a void within myself."
