We've all been caught with an accidental sunburn on our face, but how does that affect your makeup routine? Gretta's got all the tips to help you tone down the red and get rid of the burn.
**Set aside your regular beauty routine.** "You don't want to use your normal anti-aging [creams] or acids or anything harsh, because you have to treat your sunburn like it's a stove burn," Gretta says. "It's been damaged and it's very sensitive, and it will only raise the redness because those products help circulation." Also avoid products with mineral oil which prevent the skin from breathing and can delay the healing process. And, be patient. "You can't use the anti-aging for at least a week," Gretta adds. "You'll burn your skin, you'll feel it. It won't feel right to you."
**Start out with an aloe gel.** "The skin is hot and you've lost the first layer, so its shiny," Gretta explains, suggesting you start out by applying aloe to your skin. "It's going to let the skin heal, it's going to hydrate and you need that."
**Go green to lose the red.** In place of foundation, try a Eucerin cream which has a green tint which can counteract the unwanted redness, neutralize the color and be used to even out skin tone. "If you can skip the foundation all the better because I want that skin to breath and to heal," says Gretta, "and it won't if you load it up."
**Still red? Try some concealer.** The forehead, cheeks and nose may need a little extra help, so dab on concealer. "You want to use these more gentle products for about a week to two," Gretta says. "That's how long it takes the skin to heal."
**Switch to mineral makeup for accent colors.** "I love the mineral because it's not crazy shimmery," Gretta says, since shine is the last thing you need when you have a sunburn. And for colors -- keep it neutral. "Stay away from your pinks, purple colors because you're honestly too bright. Don't load it up. Go back to basic brown."
**Stay away from lipstick, too.** "Pigments are very drying and glosses will only make things pop," Gretta says, pointing to a brown based color from Burts Bees lip balms as a good choice. "It's going to hydrate."
**Skip the summer whites.** Once your makeup is complete, you also want to pick your outfits carefully to tone down a sunburn. "People always love to put white on and it just pops the red, so go for off-white or neutral tones," Gretta says. "If you need a color, blues and greens are cooling so it's going to help counteract the skin."
