These Sweet Dogs Have Been Helping Children Who've Had a Hard Time Coping Emotionally During COVID

At one special school in Brooklyn—and at a number of schools around the country—the North Shore Animal League America’s "Mutt-i-grees Curriculum" has been hard at work helping students learn how to cope with a multitude of social and emotional issues, especially in light of the pandemic.

"We brought the dogs [in] because North Shore Animal League [America] did their assembly, and they brought puppies with them," says the school’s Principal Teri—and the children could not have been more thrilled.

"The students learn how to interact," she says. "They learn how to make decisions, they learn different ways that they can deal with conflict, different ways that they can learn how to overcome adversity."

"The dogs added [so much] into the actual curriculum," she adds, "and added into the lives of the students—into their school lives and their privates lives and the lives of the community. And it really became something more than I imagined it could possibly be."
