When you think about renovating your home or upgrading your home décor, the laundry room may not be the first place you think of refreshing. But if you have to spend a significant amount of time there (necessary evil, are we right?), you might as well make the space a bright + pleasant one to be in.

That's exactly what "Pennies For a Fortune" blogger Fariha Nasir — a mom and budget DIY pro with nearly 80k followers on Instagram — did.

"When we bought this home, it was very builder grade," Fariha says. "It had nothing added to it — just cabinets that the builders had installed. I wanted to give it a more fresh, light and airy look, with some modern farmhouse-inspired elements to it."

And since she DIYed nearly everything in the space, she didn't have to spend a ton of money. Not to mention, the DIYs are commitment-free, so you can easily remove them when you're ready for a change (or if you're living in a rental space).

Get her genius, removable, rental-friendly laundry room DIY ideas below.

"We had basic grey tile in here," Fariha says, "and I bought a stencil off the internet, got some chalk paint [with a top coat] and got to work."

Fariha used this tile stencil for her laundry room. You can shop more options from the same designer on Etsy, too.

3. Build a Removable Wood Countertop Over Your Washing Machine & Dryer

"All I needed for this was some plywood pieces, and the hardwood store cut it out for me," the DIY pro says. "The stain I used in here is weathered oak. I wanted to give it a more cool-toned wood look, instead of giving it a warm, dark, more traditional wood color."

Editor's note: You can find weathered oak stain at home improvement stores, like Home Depot.

4. Use Peel-and-Stick Backsplash Tiles

Fariha used these peel-and-stick subway tiles for her laundry room backsplash. "It's not really backsplash, you guys, and it's not really tile," she says. "It's just peel-and-stick backsplash. It cuts out really easily, so you can put it around your appliances or wherever you need to make a cut-out."

If traditional subway tile isn't your style, we scoured the internet for more backsplash tile ideas.
